Difference Between Speed Bumps and Speed Humps
Both speed bumps and speed humps are vertical obstacles which are used in traffic controlling and management. These are the most commonly used structure to slow down the traffic. These can be made of asphalt, concrete, plastic, rubber or metal.
Speed humps are usually installed in places where the followed speed is 10-15 mph. These can be seen often on local streets, or connecting roads where the traffic moves smoothly. According to the Fire Code, Fire Lanes must be installed and managed in all places of business. All parking lot fire lanes shall be permitted and authorized by the Fire Department and plans must be submitted for approval before the commencing construction of any building where fire lanes are necessitated. Be it private or public, it is forbidden for anyone to post, mark, or otherwise classify a non-fire lane street as a fire lane.
When installing a fire lane for your parking lot, there are some specific requirements that must be fulfilled. These requirements are usually the same but can differ depending on the township or municipality. You can confirm the specific fire lane requirements in your locality, but here are a few fundamental parking lot fire lane requirements. Signs – There must be proper signage for fire lanes. This will let people know that they are not permitted to park there at that point at any time. Width – In order to support the size of the emergency vehicles and their equipment, there must be a particular width for fire lanes. The bare minimum passable width of a fire lane shall not be less than 24 feet. This is obligatory to allow for two fire trucks to pass in a situation where there is an emergency. Elevated Surfaces and Bridges – Bridge shall be constructed and managed according to the AASHTO Standard Specification for Highway Bridges, wherever an elevated surface or a bridge is part of a fire access road. Gates - All gates across fire lane access must fulfill the endorsement of both the Transportation and Fire Departments. In addition, plans must be tendered to the Fire Department and accepted before taking out a permit with the Building Inspections Department. Turn-Around Areas – An authorized turn-around shall be provided when it becomes impossible to connect a fire lane at the two ends to a dedicated street. Furthermore, dead-end fire lanes shall not go beyond 150 feet in length. Noncompliance with the parking lot fire lane requirements may lead to fines.
